The symbolic shield, which Epictetus is overlayed onto, is characterised by the word "ΕΓΧΕΙΡΙΔΙΟΝ," translating to "Enchiridion," meaning "handbook" or "manual."
This guide, written by Epictetus around 125 AD, he kept with him to protect his mind and integrity from the outer worlds chaos. Drawing on its knowledge whenever he found himself in a moment of adversity. Reminding himself of the philosophy he followed.
